Dogs prefer winter

Let’s face it, cats and beaches don’t mix. Dogs and beaches, however, were designed together millions of years ago. They have the same DNA, the same salty flavor and the same unflappable sense of spirit.

Which is why dog lovers love winter in Laguna Beach.

It’s the unspoken time when dog catchers nap, and dogs run freely along the coves of North and South Laguna. Main Beach, not so much. Dog owners might run the risk of a wayward ticket – or more likely a warning if you show the cop your shopper’s permit.

Officially, the leash laws are year-round; unofficially, leash laws have a short leash that focus on summer. There may be some exceptions, but we haven’t heard of any significant enforcement during winter.

Instead, it’s rover time. Ball time. Endless smiling dog time.

As long as you keep Fido civil and pick up after him, chances are you can let him nourish his prehistoric soul. Unleash his full potential and let him body surf. Let him shimmy and shake. Let him roll in the sand as if he has nowhere to go.

Join him, if you want, and learn how to better live in the moment.

Join him and be a better human.
