Tourists don’t even notice this dark, important corner under Skyloft (formerly Tommy Bahama). But that will soon change. Make way for Laguna Fish Company.

A fish walks into a bar …

It’s been almost three years since the Tommy Bahama restaurant closed downtown, but it looks like there’s finally a solid replacement: the Laguna Fish Company.

Backed by Ivan Spiers, owner of Mozambique and Skyloft (in the same Heisler Building), Laguna Fish Co. has passed key city approvals and should open without too much trouble at 400 S. Coast Hwy.

It will be a fast-casual restaurant, which should keep prices down. So you will walk in, order at the counter, then sit down and wait for your meal. An early menu supports its fish-only focus with raw offerings (oysters, sashimi, etc.), ceviche, bowls, sandwiches and burritos. Again, all fish.

Spiers is no stranger to pulling off successful restaurants and said the new place is scheduled to open in six weeks. With Skyloft literally upstairs from the new restaurant, he should be able to enjoy some economies of scale and staff support.

There’s also the full bar alcohol license, so that will help pay the rent at the marquee location.
