Car shows are mostly for old people, but golly, old looked good on Sunday, Sept. 26, at the annual charity car show put on by the Laguna Beach Rotary Club.
There is nostalgia, to be sure, but there are other reasons why car shows are alluring to old and young alike. Let’s start with beauty.
When you look at the lines and curves of some cars you realize that beauty is framed by the contrast of space – filled by air, metal and longing.
It’s not just a guy thing, it’s a people thing. It’s not for some lost era but for the necessary quality we seek in our daily lives.
These are cars designed with purpose. They have form and nuance. There is subtlety because the creators cared. There is no visual brute force that you see today — only respect, intelligence and balance.
The reason people point at cool vintage cars is not because it reminds them of their first love. It reminds them of the love they never had.
