The demolition work at the former White House restaurant is impressive. Out of the chaos will emerge Finney’s Crafthouse.

Not your grandfather’s White House

If you’ve walked by the old White House restaurant lately, you know it’s no longer there – completely gutted to the studs and then some. The work on the new Finney’s Crafthouse is in full swing.

We knew the $2 million renovation was coming but wow, it’s here – loud and clear. Jackhammers, busy workers, scaffolding, wiring, plumbing. Even Southern California Edison will be involved installing a new power transformer at the site, 340 S. Coast Hwy.

Perhaps second to the Hotel Laguna makeover, this remodel is substantial.

By all accounts, the result should be worth it. The fast-casual chain – with seven other locations – is not expensive, thankfully. The food looks decent and gets good reviews. Sizable appetizers (nachos, sliders, coconut shrimp, etc.) range from $10 to $14. The entrees include fancy pizzas, hot wings, tacos and sandwiches. Their house burger is $12, which is a bargain for Laguna Beach.

The most expensive thing on the menu is an ahi salad for $16. Setting aside the fact that this restaurant is a small chain, it will fill a nice gap in Laguna’s increasingly expensive restaurant scene. Plus, from the pictures at the other locations, it will be busy, fun and full of life.
