You may have seen this “waterwise” sign. It’s an annual city campaign to get free stuff – er, conserve water.

Of course it’s a Wyland thing

But wait, there’s more.

You, too, can win a Wyland Soaring Turtle Travel Mug.

Not into mugs? How about a Wyland/USA Surfing “Surf Tokyo” towel, or a Wyland Foundation Whale Tail Cuff Beanie?

How? By entering the Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation.

Did we say Wyland? Of course we did.

Laguna Beach is proud of its seven-year winning streak as “Most Waterwise City” for its size.

The “My Water Pledge” is a friendly competition between U.S. cities to see who can get the most residents to promise to save the most water. There’s no real measuring involved but that’s beside the point. This is a feel-good way to raise awareness – and get free swag.

Last year, according to the Wyland PR team, the challenge awarded more than $50,000 in prizes to nearly 300 residents in U.S. cities. For more details or to sign up, visit the Wyland site.

No one calls it a pyramid scheme, but you know, the more friends you refer the better.

And in a year of deluge, it’s not just about water conservation. The campaign promotes changing behaviors, ranging from fixing home leaks to reducing harmful runoff into local rivers and streams to eliminating single-use plastics.

Our own mayor, Bob Whalen (no relation), is excited about winning again.

“Since its inception, our residents have embraced the challenge and shown the nation that water use efficiency and sustainability are an integral part of living in California where droughts are increasing in intensity and length,” Whalen said. “This challenge serves as a reminder of the important role each of us play in the protection and conservation of our natural resources.”

That’s Bob being excited.

So get busy and enter because you don’t want to miss out on a “Reusable Petal Aluminum Hand Soap Bottle,” including “five clean-scented foaming soap pods.”

We are assuming that the soap pods are environmentally friendly. If not, that would be awkward.
