It’s like when golf courses aerate their greens and fairways. Caltrans is paving the roads in Laguna Beach.
Making them nice, painting, enabling more traffic.
Instead, do what golf courses do during this time. Close.
This is a perfect opportunity to turn Laguna into a true village. Shut down the roads and simply not allow cars.
More precisely, don’t allow pass-through traffic. Locals would be allowed to navigate using designated routes to get home and do shopping. But that’s it.
The benefits would be enormous.
It would prove it can be done, and the world would not end.
People from Newport or Dana Point would have to find other routes to bother. If we closed for two weeks, it might even change their habits for good.
To make sure they didn’t revert to their old speeding ways, charge them a pass-through fee. Again, this is not unprecedented.
Traffic in Laguna has been a killer for years. Incremental improvements are not working.
It’s time to let the golfers take over.
